Industry Standards

Norplex-Micarta takes the responsibility of testing and certifying materials very seriously. We recognize that in today's environment of increasing litigation and product liability that customers want to be assured that the material that they utilize meets all necessary criteria as specified by the end user. With new materials now available from a wide source of global suppliers, Norplex-Micarta has enhanced our laboratory resources, by adding new equipment and testing capabilities to insure that we can provide the compliance to the required specifications. Norplex-Micarta also offers testing services to our customers for products that they may purchase from another vendor, as a service to reduce their risk and exposure in the market.

Norplex-Micarta is the leading manufacturer of high performance thermoset composite materials. We work directly with customers to manufacture the highest quality specialty sheet products, pre-pregs, rods and molded shapes, and tubes to meet demanding composite applications for our OEMs and fabricators around the world.

China National Standard (GB)

National Standard is appved by Administration of National Standardization, and shall be bought by regulated channels after the announcement. Besides the mandatory standard issued by National law and policy, generally the standard has certain recommendation significance.

International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)

The IEC Standards for thermoset composites are developed by a team of experts (currently six) from the UK, Austria, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the United States. They are the most current and up to date standards for industrial laminates in the world. A Norplex-Micarta employee is the current U.S. delegate and Convenor (chairman) of the Working Group (IEC TC15 WG-6). It is the job of the Working Group to write standards for the thermoset composites listed below.

IPC (formerly, Institute of Printed Circuits)

IPC 4101B – “Specifications for Base Materials for Rigid and Multilayer Printed Boards.” This specification generally covers the glass epoxy products though it was written primarily for copper clad materials. The base laminate properties are used widely in the industry for unclad glass reinforced products that are produced in sheet form. Norplex-Micarta’s G10, FR-4, and G11 products meet and exceed the criteria established and published in the IPC 4101B specification.

National Electrical Manufacturers Association / American Society for Testing and Materials

NEMA LI-1 is the most widely used standard for thermoset composites in sheet, tube, and rod forms in the United States. NEMA LI-1 “Industrial Laminated Thermosetting Products” was revised in 1999 to mirror MIL-I-24768 with the intention of replacing this Military Specification. The NEMA Standard provides generic category recognition of grades based on their construction, reinforcement, and resin. Typical properties for each category are defined and published along with standard dimensional tolerances for standard forms of the product.

Customer Written Specifications

Norplex-Micarta has developed materials to meet the needs of various customer specifications over the years. In some cases this requires a specific resin formulation on a unique substrate material to accomplish the desired results. Often these specifications are proprietary to the customer, and Norplex-Micarta takes the confidentiality of these customer constructions and systems very seriously.
